Sisters and Brothers,

URGENT: Join us on April 30th at 2pm to Ensure Workers are Heard on New Mexico’s Proposed Occupational Heat Standard

We’re asking for member and engagement in a critical effort to protect workers from dangerous heat conditions on the job. AFL-CIO is hosting a labor call on April 30th 2PM MT to discuss a quickly evolving occupational heat standard that could protect thousands of workers across our state.

New Mexico’s Environment Department (NMED) has proposed a statewide workplace heat standard — a major step forward in safeguarding worker health and safety in a rapidly warming climate. However, industry opposition is already strong and well-organized. NMED needs to hear directly from workers and advocates about why this rule matters — and they need to hear it now.

A 60-day public comment period is now open (April 1st–May 30th), and this is a key window to make sure labor voices are front and center.

What’s happening next:

·  Comments are preferred through NMED’s official public comment portal.

·  NMED has launched a Community Engagement Week to hear from different groups. Key dates (tentative):

o    May 13 – Virtual All-Inclusive Community Engagement Meeting (all-day)

o    May 14 – Hybrid Industry-Only Meeting (evening, invite-only)

o    May 15 – Hybrid Advocate Meeting (evening, invite-only)

We urge members, union affiliates, and workers to participate in these sessions, submit comments, and speak directly to the need for strong heat protections.

NMED is expected to publish a revised rule in late June.

If adopted, the proposed rule could go into effect in mid-August 2025.

Please help us ensure the voices of workers are not drowned out. We need to show that New Mexico’s labor movement stands united behind the need for this heat standard. Meeting information is hyperlinked above and attached below.
